FL - hence why I reckon that the premise that the longer it takes, the more difficult it becomes, is vital. To ID a site then try and get planning permission can easily take up to 2 years, witness PGPF. Perhaps the 3 years includes sorting out the road system? Just a thought..... OP - and should you sack a guy after 3 months just because he fucked up one week? Yes, we've had some shitty results this week. But we've also had some good results as well, lest we forget. It's not always easy to beat everyone in site if you go down, especially if you have to sell to counteract some seriously nasty black holes. REPD - Four seasons of under performance - but for three of them we at least stayed in the Prem! Can you tell me TB's achievements? We are playing teams with less resources than us, forget the stadium for the timebeing, and still can't beat them!! One of the four managers was temp. afterall. I do rather object to being called a Spurz-fan type and your stance that seems to follow the route of blind acceptance. If I were poor at my job then I would be told so and would eventually be replaced. Surely WFC Managers follow the same rules?

Come on boyz und Grrrlz, what has Burton done to deserve managing. He is no better than Drillo. Don't be blinded. Burton is a great coach, he has proved that but he hasn't got the balls to succeed as a manager. When did you EVER hear Ferguson, Kinnear and other good manager sever admit mistakes publically. The guy is likeable but is, and will be, a failure as a MANAGER. You ALL know that that is true, deep down. The Wimbledon tradition of old doesn't exist, lets appoint a good manager, like Dave Jones. He is hungry now and will want to prove himself.

Old Pelham - you may be lost in your own misery but you don't need to post it 3 times. As for what you've said, some of the comments I've heard this past couple of days are DANGEROUSLY close to the kind of stuff Man City/Spurz fans come up with - what has such knee jerk reactions done to those clubs? Answer - nothing. We have consistently underperformed for 4 seasons now, under 4 different managers, 4 different training regimes - what's the common denominator? Many of the players playing today were still there 4 years ago. True, some of the "newer" players aren't doing as well as they can at the moment, but never underestimate the power of these older players. If you keep on sacking managers yet naeively (IMO) assume that the playing staff are somehow going to become world beaters, then we really WILL be looking down at division 2. And those calling for TB's head at the moment will have that blood on their hands....

Gotta say it, a lot of the reason we are becoming a bunch of all time losers is down to poor management. Okay, we lost some good players at the end of last season - I rate Sully and Thatch. Plus injuries... But we still have Prem experienced players and most of those skills should still be there. Poor player fitness ....bollocks....we ain't got no motivation! I have supported WFC for thirty five years and this bunch are acting worse than useless, which is a finger pointed directly at the top. The cull needs to start at the Management - sorry TB, ain't good enough. Nice man, but weak. We could return to the Prem with the players we have got...just needs the first tweak, the rest will follow. I know that the response will be it's down to the players..sorry it ain't..you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise. And I tell you one thing, TB stays and we could be looking down the barrel at Div 2.....

Lost in my own misery - Thursday, December 07, 2000 at 13:11:27 (GMT)

Well its probably already been said a million times but Tuesday night was the biggest Jekyll & Hyde display I have ever seen. Ist half was some of the best football I have seen us play this season. But what makes a team suddenly so inept and incompetent in 15 mins? I was dismayed by the lack of quality passing and also players movement off the ball. I think it may be the latter that causes the former. I know he scored the goal but I think Roberts was awful and almost panicked when in possession of the ball. This is no knee jerk reaction to the result but a long held belief. Some basic tactical awareness training would really benefit this squad. Look at Uniteds movement off the ball last night. Always someone making themselves available for the ball, and then closing down immediately if possession was lost. I don't mind losing if we are moving forward bringing in talented kids that will improve but Tuesday we went backwards with over the hill under acheivers(Trond excepted). C'mon Terry PLEASE PLEASE never make us sit through that humilation again. Well done to those that went -great atmosphere for 45 mins.

There are (were?) still some fans who believe that Wimbledon are a Premiership club and have too many quality players to be where they are, and still seem shocked when we lose, and can't see that we are crap; perhaps there are some players too who think they are too good to be where they are? Division 2 will sort that out! As for Big Mick Harford, the motivator, don't make me laugh :-( Many a fan has said they'd be scared to tell him to go but obviously the players aren't scared and again (sigh) if TB is scared then he shouldn't be manager (and shouldn't TB be the motivator), and if Harford can teach a striker how to play then you'd think he'd be asking TB to get some crosses in for his big fat protege??

REPD. Your match report just about sums up what I guess most of us were feeling like last night, except you forgot to mention what pondlife Palace fans are (had the misfortune to be in the Cherry Tree by Norwood Junction station after the game). Losing to a team supported by plankton hurts about as much as relegation last year. I have to say that if what you are saying is true about TB, then arent we just going over old Drillo ground again. I can see why TB needs to play Hartson (although his value is rapidly deprecating), but if he needs to play Gayle and Ardley as well due to player power then things really are in a bad way, and TB needs to stand up and be counted, or hell go the same way as Egil. Even more worrying, although perhaps unpalatable, for me is the fact that it is not just the likes of JH and MG who need moving on, it is how poor our other players are. I am not even sure if it is down to lack of confidence, because the more of our current crop of players I see, the more I worry about the future. Aside from Trond (I cannot recall such an unpopular sub in a long while), Davis, Karlsson, Euell, Francis ask yourselves how many of our other regulars seem to cut it at the highest level in this division, or even have the potential to do so. Now I dont doubt the commitment of the others (Williams, Holloway, Roberts,) but I very much doubt if theyll even be able to begin to lead us anywhere near the Promised Land.

Wiz - another thing about player power, certainly in WFC's case : Mick Harford. He's supposed to be the "motivator" of the coaching staff. And is he? Is he fuck. When the mass cull finally takes place (if TB won't do it, R&G certainly will), I think one prominent member of our coaching staff should be amongst them..... Mac - "what's happened to our Dons?". Same problem as we have had for too many seasons now. Complacency, fitness, attitude and dare I say, arrogance. I think arrogance sums it all up.

Fortunately you forgot your camera :-); Certainly agree with Mr Barnard but hope suggestions of player power aren't true as implication is that the manager is not in control...perhaps TB could take a leaf out of the venerable Bobby Robson's book, when the Legend took over at Ipswich there was player power. Mr. Robson took the player power (Bill Baxter) into the changing rooms, locked the door and punched the shit out of him. Bill Baxter left, player power was transferred to the manager and Ipswich went on to glory. Don't know if the players were thinking any differently to us at that time...

Wiz - I don't think it's quite as easy as that. I remember David Barnard telling me once that "footballers think differently to everyone else. They don't react to things the way other people do". Meaning that whilst "we" would drop Gayle from a great height it doesn't mean that TB will (or can).

I am not saying TB out but if he's a victim of player power he cannot be an effective manager, if as so many people think, Gayle should be dropped why doen't he drop him? Doen't mean he is sold but just plain dropped out of the first team, I can't believe any manager worth his salt is intimidated by player power. The team is going nowhere but mid-table so let's take some chances with those untried but hungry and drop the prima donnas.

Wiz - I'm not going to join the "Getting Impatient With TB" club for this one little reason : the players he has **inherited** are generally a law unto themselves. He wants to get rid of JH, but can't. He's probably under a lot of player power to keep playing Gayle, even though I'm more than convinced he too is on the "out" list. For TB's WFC to move on, he'll need to sacrifice one big name PDQ, otherwise he'll just be left with the same rabble that we've had for a while now. Fuck this shit, I'm going to listen to my new Marilyn Manson CD - Tuesday, December 05, 2000 at 23:21:11 (GMT)

If I was a professional footballer the highlight of my week would be the game,it used to be when I played Morden& District League div 5; and all the fans are up for each game so why the hell can't a professional footballer playing for Wimbledon F.C. be totally motivated, focussed and just plain fucking honoured to play as a professional footballer.I don't care if players don't play well, form can be fickle, but English football is based on a bedrock of guts, commitment, passion and sweat and Wimbledon FC used to be the epitome of it. Not now. REPD's report is full of the passion and heart that WFC should display on the pitch, and I am getting more than a tad impatient at a manager who appears unable to motivate and appears to be safe and prosaic instead of adveturous and brave. Not fucking happy!! WTID

trying hard to keep faith with Terry Burton - Tuesday, December 05, 2000 at 23:12:10 (GMT)

What are we all so surprised about? Palarse recent form is pretty good, ours is shite. They are at their home (albeit at Uncle Ron's pleasure) and we are at our rented gaff where we have been shite most of the season so far. They wanted to win, we wanted to piss about and defend a 1-0 lead, something that we have only managed against Boro due to the lateness of the goal. I fear that the fans will soon become as apathetic as many of the players and just switch off attending. I will not be surprised if this happens, but how about making absolutely no noise, chanting or anything during the Grimsby game next week, even if we score! Then we'll see whether the players accuse us of not caring and I will write to them and tell them that that is rich coming from them!! I predict that we will lose 4-1 at Brum and draw 1-1 with Grimsby, after going ahead in both games. It seems that once we score one, we must score another to stop the relaxation factor coming to the fore. Anyone heard football being described as a complicated game? Nah, thought not.

It's a question of comfort and wearability. Did I ever tell you I wear KMart jeans? And to me, talking tactics are like talking about films - I neither understand them nor really care about the intrecies of them. REPD - you have just answered the question yourself! That is the dilemma, Saturday showed we had no real width until Pecker came on. As impressed as I am with Hawkins this season he couldn't cut it as a wingback on the day. How many times did players drift back into the middle and then the midfield dog fights meant the ball didn't break for ages. We hardly attacked down the left all match. Enough said label boy....

Hmmm personally think we aren't playing to his strengths. We need to putting in early crosses, not waiting for teams to get 8 men back in the box by the time Ardley eventually arrives at the byline and whips in a cross. Hartson doesn't have to pace to run at/past defenders. Pity about Robinson as he was meant to be good at getting in behind defenders and thus give a another attacking dimension. REPD - your crediability as the rogue gun toting beer swilling porn importer is seriously in question after your label clothing outburst dude. SA/Iain H - I think the problem with the home form could really screw us financially, because we're not enticing people thru our gates in the form of our decent marketing (hey, I haven't slagged off WFC Marketing in 2 weeks, gimme a break :) ), and the "other" way you get in support, ie winning games, just ain't happening. Good to see that TB isn't slagging off the home fans though, he suggested that our defence was pretty good yesterday (true) and that Rob Gier played well (also true), it's up the other end that's the problem (very true).... Dom - thanx for the comments :) I think one problem TB is having this season is that his backroom staff isn't really that good (ie MH). He really could do with somebody like the paedo, yes I know I've given Mr Rix a little bit of a hard time in the past, but I for one would welcome him with open arms and closed legs if it meant that it got WFC out of its current rut..... GBLB - amazingly, yesterday I really did think back to that article last year where I wrote our squad in general wasn't Prem quality, and in many instances is not good enough for the first division. When you consider that the good players I put down yesterday were in general the "new" ones, it does at least give me some hope, and that it's the older players who are letting us down in many ways. Liverpool had the same problem in 1993, they had a mass clearout as well. Have a theory about Ardley and Gayle : I've heard stories at other clubs that certain players *have* to play because of influence within the camp, regardless of age or current eptitude. Methinks that there is pressure within WFC that certain players have to play for political reasons. Witness last year, similar thing happened. I would like to have this theory disproved, but at the moment I can't think of any other reasons. Agree 110% with JH, and I think Trond went off with a knock.

Looking up what acerbic means - Sunday, December 03, 2000 at 12:53:55 (GMT)

Spot on again with your match report REPD. I seem to recall last season that you wrote an article pointing out that our problem was the quality of team, basically saying that most of squad was rubbish and would not get into many other Premiership teams. Events last season supported your analysis, and I'm afraid this season it is more of the same but at a lower level. Basically, hardly any of the players on show today would make the first team of those sides challenging for promotion. In fact I'd say that some of the midfielders on display for us today would struggle to cut it in division 2. And can anyone explain to me why TB carries on our OGEM's trick of constantly starting with Gayle and Ardley, despite their ineptitude? I suspect that TB is starting with Hartson, despite wanting rid, because he knows he is still a potentaial asset who would be devalued through being dropped, but no manager in their right mind would buy Gayle and Ardley. Does TB actaully rate these two? Then again judging by him bringing off Trond for Hunt, maybe he does.

I assume "royalle uni" was a reference to above. :-) Anyway, glad to have you back, as I missed your acerbic commentary in the wake of the Norwich game. What a load of rubbish indeed. I really hope that we're going to offer Kiddie toucher a job this week. No, I'm not a nonce-sympathiser, I just don't think Burton's up to it on his own. I'm sure he'll make a good manager sometime in the future, but that's a long way off, and we ain't got that sort of time to waste. Final sour thoughts: why isn't Pecker starting? and what's the betting we get beat by Palace Tuesday night? My money says we will... Anyway, welcome back, and keep it coming, mate.

Royaume Uni - Sunday, December 03, 2000 at 01:45:10 (GMT)

I agree with your assessment of today's game. No fucking way are we going up this year. Playoff spot is hugely unlikely. We badly need a captain, a goal poacher and a decent midfielder that can create. I'm seriously thinking of not buying a season ticket next year and using the money for away games.

NW10 - Sunday, December 03, 2000 at 00:47:49 (GMT)

Sorry about my post below saying we would win 2-0. I assumed that the team would be up for it after losing 3-1 at the Hawthorns. I also assumed that we would be playing for 90 minutes rather than 35. Should haven known better I suppose! I have now watched the new team play 17 times since TB took over and only seen us win three times. I admit that I should be grateful after last season, but I fear that many of our fans who expected us to walk this division will not be turning up at our "home" games if we don't sort it out sharpish (8 goals in eleven games including the Worthy at Selhurst, and anybody who missed Gillingham will only have seen 4 in 10!). Something needs to be done as I can't see us beating Palarse if we play like we did today, let alone Brum next week. Doh!

Admittedly, I didn't go to Naarwich (unsurprisingly), but I'm being serious when I can say I can count on one hand only the amount of games where he's played like a 7m GBP player. REPD: Listen to me now, and listen good. OK, perhaod you were being sacastic in your comment about being the "chief Hartson basher" but IMO you certainly are. The fact that you are perfectly happy to slag off and "bash" Hartson at just about everything he does, even if he has scored 10 goals in 16 games, yet you were one of the people who got most annoyed when the anti-Drillo crew came along (and this was when it became clear that Drillo was no motivater, could not get his ideas through to the team to start with, and the bits he could get through did not get through well enough hence the losing streak), is nothing but pure HYPOCRISY. You say that my views change with the wind. errrrrrrrrr. ok then. Perhaps you have the Lisbie situation in mind. When I decided to think positive. Well, errrrrrrrr, I wasn't being serious. Name me any other time? I doin't mean to start a slagging bash here REPD, but you really need to sort your attitude out, you've got your GCSEs this May!

My god say what you want about Hartson, but he certainly generates debate in cyberspace like no other Wimbledon player. But really, thinking we'll turn the corner when he goes is rather wishful. There are others who have been in the shade due to fat one, who, IMO, have been doing more damage with their mediocrity but have been able to hide behind the Welshman's ability to engender controversy and attention. Getting rid of the likes of Euell and Hartson is hardly brave, rather it is easy: they are decent players and are wanted by other clubs. It is what happens with the likes of Gayle, Roberts, Kimble, Blackwell, Ardley, Leaburn that is most important. These floundering mediocrities are all, doubtless, on Premiership type wages but can barely cut the mustard against average divsion one outfits. Added to that the likes of Thomas, Robinson, Selley, Hunt (TB's transfer dealings have left alot to be desired) and it is clear that the selling of JH is hardly a sign that our decline is coming to an end.

Wondering if anyone's explained to Dubya about the Balkans - Friday, November 17, 2000 at 23:46:46 (GMT)

Lisbie was at Charlton long before players of the quality of Johannson arrived and I don't think he would score goals that Hartson has scored either . He is 23 , has had oppertunity to prove himself at Charlton but is not good enough . I want a replacement like Mendonca because he is experieced and has a track record or a lower league player like Neil Harris from Milwall . I can accept Hartson going if the money is right and the replacement is good , this deal offers neither .
Gregg
Ulster - Friday, November 17, 2000 at 23:45:07 (GMT)

OK Lisbie has scored 2 goals in 50 games, but how old is he and how long a run has he had in a team with Johansson and J Hunt in it (be honest, we could use both of these well). BFJ has scored only one goal that I would deem to be something special (ie where nobody else would have scored given the same opportunity) and that was his first at Huddersfield. The others have been the sort that Lisbie (or Leaburn?) could have scored in the same situation. What will piss me off is if we get a striker who is quick, supplemented with a couple of quick wingback type players who get to the byline and provide good crosses. Reason? This sort of service has been severly lacking in almost all of the games I have seen this season. But if REPD thinks that there would be a squad benefit in BFJ going, then so be it, no one player is bigger than the team (not now he has slimmed down a bit!!). WTID

Where did you get your info on Lisbie , he is crap . The facts show he has scored 2 goals in 50+ appearance , that is even worse than Mr Leaburn had for Charlton . He may be fast but we already have Agyemang . What i am saying is I don't want another waste of space squad player with no ability taking the place of a proven International . We need more money and a better player in exchange for this to be anywhere near acceptable , if not , prepare for a long and goal -less winter.

SA - no, FL definitely isn't mad, though anyone who looks at him would probably agree that he's an axe murderer :) The JH deal really has to go through for all concerned parties : not only do Charlton "lose" out (ho ho) if it flops but so do we. Why? Because then it will virtually impossible to motivate him, and people I doubt will be so inclined to give him backing anymore. Point to ponder : if JH was supposed to be so motivated after Rangers told him to piss off, why did he give the impression that he didn't give a fuck?

Florida John is not mad, well he wasn't when I met him at Oodersfield. He may have some interesting opinions, but they are made from the head as much as the heart and in the end he is usually right. Personally, I wouldn't miss BFJ as I feel that he is not the player he was at Arsenal (mind you would Anelka or Henry look good playing for us??). However, I think that he will fail the medical and we will end up getting pissed because he hasn't gone!! If this is the case and he was going to accept less money at CAFC, then we should reduce his wages accordingly, or send him somewhere on loan. I wouldn't even mind sending him to Spudz (only joking! or am I?). Unlike BFJ, I'm WTID!!

Recount, recount, recount, recount, recount....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz - Monday, November 13, 2000 at 15:06:27 (GMT)

Agreed with pretty much most of the comments. Forwards are generally supposed to be quicker than defenders, yet not once this season have I seen one of our lot out pace a decent defender. I totally agree with Rob, we have no speed at all. Do you remember Beasent tonking the ball up to Fash (in his prime), who'd then outrun any defender in sight, and then take a poke at goal? Maybe not the most attractive sight in the world, but seeing any of our current lot running past anyone is uncommon (Kimble seems to have lost his ability to run at all). Could it be Shitehurst that causes this? No course not...the other teams have no problems at all, we need to get someone in who can run with the ball and then shoot on target......something we haven't got ATM. Bollox to Harston's 7 million!!!

Reading through the comments in guestbooks, I hear what people are saying.....the players that are selected for a game are mainly responsible for the outcome of a match and need to take that responsibilty on more often. Basic professionalism, giving 100% every game we don't seem toget from every player. I won't go into which players I think are seriously underperforming. TB needs a bit of kick up the backside too in sorting outgetting the players fitter and faster (anyone remember the days when we used to be the fitest team in the league...(under Harry Basset I suppose)) Sort out training, diet, player lifestyle etc... (i thought TB studied these methods extensively?) and we can build on the talent we have as there are some positives at the club.WTID

Sitting outside James Thin bookshop 10.45am-11.30 drinking my over-priced hot chocolate made me see your point very clearly, as DISAPPOINTED Dons fans, and DONS FANS TO-BE (youngsters) were turned away without RE's signature. Shamefully we live in an age where MUFC book signings in London's Oxford St stop the traffic, but in the very heart of Wimbledon it's local team doesn't bother to send a replacement. Even a reserve would have done, Kjetil in plaster, an apologetic Kenny C, Reg, ANYONE! But narrr, they don't seem bothered. Why we bother sometimes I DON't know.

Sutton, still angered - Monday, November 13, 2000 at 12:46:55 (GMT)

Reading the comments below, a common theme seems to be reoccuring : that of lack of professionalism. Methinks the priority from now on this season is to adopt some, and get rid of any of the players who aren't. This may mean keeping some of the "deadwood", but they'll probably be more worthy than those who aren't. TB may be bricking it at selling those who I think deep down he wants rid of, because of supporter backlash (believe me, I don't think he'll get a hard a time as he thinks), but we are never going to progress until those who are there for a good time and a good time only are dispatched off elsewhere....

Get there and Stephen Crabtree and his entourage apologise profusely that he couldn't attend "due to having to attend a training meeting" Wonder what pub that was in? Anyway Stephen signed it. They took my name and address to pass to WFC in the hope that they could do something at a later date to conpensate for him non-appearance. FL - on the Northern Dons v. the Southern Dons, this was Brian Irvine's idea. Because I haven't watched many Wimbledon matches this season, when I came over, even when we won 4 nil at Crewe, I knew then that we're gonna get slaughtered by Fulham, not so much because we have crappy players (oh yes, I know we do) but so few of our players adopt a professional approach to our games! The only comment I remember after my long haul flight is Tim's comment on Hartson when Hartson didn't run after a ball which was only 2 yards away from him. Our players are just so fucking lazy, it pisses me off!! I watched Leeds last night and while I detest Alan Smith and Lee Bowyer, they ran like a lunatic, they chased every single ball and they just didn't give up. If we have players like that, we wouldn't get slaughtered by Fulham. When is Burton going to wake up to the fact that no one should be allowed to run on the pitch as a Wimbledon player unless they promise to play until they drop. Bloody hell, I need to lie down...

REPD. Actually I used to quite like John Gayle, but those were different times indeed. Wish Hartson has some of his endeavour. Hate to say it but I do not believe we have progressed since last season. Of the 14 players you speak of, how many can you say are actually any good and will come through. Karlsson Davis, Hawkins..maybe Ageymang. The rest, well i'll take a lot of convincing about indeed. Why do i get the feeling that our glory years are long gone and a spell of complete mediocrity beckons, it is happened to plenty of other clubs.

GBLB - hence the quote "it's time for part 2 of the mass cull". Have we progressed since the last time we lost 3-0 to Fulham? Yes and no. Yes, we're still playing really bad at times, but no, we've given 14 players their debut, and a great deal of them will be first teamers next year. Admittedly, I am singling out JH, but quite frankly he's our highest profile player and at times I think he's as effective as John Gayle was. If we'd only paid 1m for him I could just about tolerate his current performances. On the bright side, we do play better away from "home"....

REPD. Good match report as per usual. I think we have have to ask ourselves a serious question after yesterday's unsurprising piss-poor performance: how far have we come since our previous 3-0 routing by Fulham? Answer, IMO we have progressed not one jot. In a mediocre league, we are an average team who were thoroughly outplayed yesterday by a team who were hardly Man Utd. I cannot agree with your report more, aside from its vituperation against Hartson. Let's face it, you could substitute his name for a whole host of our players: Gayle, Kimble, Blackwell, Roberts, Ardley. I said it at the start of the season, it was no good Burton just getting rid of the Olsen signings, because we should all know now that the problems at the club goes deeper than mere personalities. Lets face it, Burton is not a magician and he has not brought us on since Drillo. There is a cancer in the club and it needs to be removed urgently: that means getting rid of Kimble, Gayle, Ardley, Hartson, Euell and Blackwell and bringing on the likes of Karlsson and Ageymang. My heart sank yesterday when Ardley came on at half time, proceeded not to get a single cross in, and appeared to have been taking tips form JH's nutritionist, yet still got a rousing reception from the Holmsdale. Enough is enough folks , it is time to get angry.

It's good to see some balanced views on Robbie Earle MBE. I don't criticise him last year for his divise actions, rather I saw it as him in a difficult position of loyal club man and captain seeing Walter Mitty in Wellington Boots not have a fucking clue about man management. But REMBE was never really true international class rather an extremely hardworking goalscoring midfielder who did an outstanding job for his club. If he had been lucky enough to play for England it would have been as much for the fans who could say a Wimbledon player was playing for England and there is no doubt he would have joined a long list of one cap players. Only Dennis Wise of the 'Wimbledon' players has had any decent England career and he isn't true international class either. Earle should thank the stars that he achieved lasting fame as the Jamaican who scored their first goal at the World Cup Finals. And but for the sad nature of his retirement he would have either retired by now or moved on as too old. I hope he stays at Wimbledon as coach or even as PR manager and I am grateful for the good memories he provided.

Kermit. We were on the way to relegation long before Drillo took over. Just look at our dreadful league positions the two seasons before. REMBE's comments last season were just, as REPD says, a sad attempt to protect the crumbling status quo, whilst fuelled no doubt by the fact that, unlike Kinnear, Drillo would not pick him for every game. I still regard Mr Earle as one of the finest Dons players I have seen, but I do not think anyone should kid themselves that his star faded a long time ago on the playing side.

He spoke for many of us when he expressed the hope that EO would not throw out the good things about WFC in the course of changes that needed to happen. Inevitably we are all going to face a decline in our later years, but its not our decline that is important, more what we achieved before then. OK, so you took my comment earlier as snide, and it retrospect perhaps it was - it wasn't my intention, I had merely wanted to point out that you tend to focus on the decline more than the achievements, and you have confirmed that with your latest message.

REPD, Spot on re REMBE. He will be remembered as an all-time great but unfortunately a lot of Wombles will remember his lack of class at the end rather than the class he showed throughout the rest of his career.

Robbie Earle is a modern day Dons legend. He ranks alongside Fash, Vinnie, Wise, Lurch etc ------ NUFF SAID

DB - *sigh*. Right, here goes : REMBE's first "you shouldn't change things" comment appeared before Drillo even got started. Now, you may feel he was right in saying it : however, if you remember, we had just come off a season which had been quite fragile for a while (did I hear somebody say "SIXTH!! SIXTH!!". Oh, sorry, it's tinnitus), and many people (including some anti-Drillo people I hasten to add) were saying that things needed to be changed. In effect, he was defending the clearly failing status quo and things just deteriorated from there. Overall, REMBE has been one of the best players of the 90s, however just as Cantona ruined his Man U legacy (in the eyes of many) by his Kung-Fu antics, and Maradona ruined his Argentinian legacy by being a total junkie, so REMBE tainted his status at WFC by contributing to last year's civil war. Now, as for snide comments like "But then you've always done that, haven't you?", I had enough of that shit last year. If you don't like what I write, don't read it. Next time, I'm just going to abuse you chronically.

Having to defend himself yet again, though I guess it goes with the territory - Thursday, November 09, 2000 at 11:36:35 (GMT)

REPD - a shame that you can't bring yourself to see REMBE's career as a whole, rather than just focus on the end of it. But then you've always done that, haven't you? In the end, he was right - EO was the wrong man for the job, and it took too long for others to realise it. REMBE's contribution to this club was massive - easily our finest player of the last 10 years, cruelly overlooked by England (a mate of mine suggested that he got the MBE because the establishment were embarrassed at this - after all, the FA, among others, had to reccommend/approve the honour). Add to that he has been fiercely loyal to WFC - never asked for a transfer when players of less that his ability were earning fortunes elsewhere. Yes, last year was a bad time for all, but there is a bigger picture. try to see it.

REPD - Have you been fiddling with your counter? There's no way your site has accumulated more than 50,000 hits! No way!! :) On the subject of REMBE, if only he kept his mouth shut last season...I have the feeling that deep down, he knows that what Drillo said to him is right - the only way to prolong his playing career is to become a substitue rather than playing a full 90 minutes game week in week out. Any news on Ainsworth and Michael Hughes?
