1999-2000

NOTE: All SW19's comments are in brown

WIMBLEDON ON THE WEB

Do you ever look at the Official Wimbledon FC web site? :

Yes 88 %
Occasionally / No 5 %
  Rarely 2 %

How useful do you find it? :

OK (or words to that effect) 58 %
Not very 36 %
  Good 5 %
  Useless 2 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

Less useful than a chocolate fireguard!

Good for quotes, crap for accuracy and news

Good for official news

Sometimes very useful but most often there is'nt much to it.

Like the audio, rest is rubbish

Not as bad as you all make out

It is getting a lot better laely, with more news, rumours and interviews. But to find the best rumours, info etc then I usually go to fans sites (SW19’s Army, W&WW and It must be dons)

The fact that most people do read the site is quite promising from the club's point of view. Rather more disconcerting is that most people find it "all right" or worse. The later entries suggests that the OS is getting better, though as in common with many things involving WFC at the moment, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

How would you improve the Official site? :

More news/general info/content 19 %
Fan/somebody else should run it 15 %
  Online ticketing/more ticket info 14 %

OTHERS : More up to date, club should run it, more honesty, chat forum, better design, better merchandise/e-commerce, more player/manager/owner interaction, complete overhaul, quicker, none, unsure

YOUR COMMENTS:

Have it run by someone who is able to speak the truth rather than what the club want the fans to think (who really believes that is was Euell that set-up a players meeting?).

Official sites don't work - full stop

The basic mistake is that the Official site is not part of the Club´s other activities. Any Company with a sales turnover of the size of a Football Club has a good working Information department. This includes all activities like Web, Advertisments, Programme, PR, Press Releases and other Information and external activities.

The club should get more involved in the content. They should use it as a mouthpiece. Articles by BRG and Burton etc. Real transfer news, not just rumours.

Get an unofficial person to run it (say. a REPD/Steve Elson etc type...)

Have you got an hour?

Written by WFC not internet co. It’s got to have a sense of the club’s personality and emotion that is entirely lacking at the moment. There is no sense of of it being a club where members actually belong rather than are just paying customers. Players/management comment and forum would be good, plus more insights into behind the scenes goings-on at the club – how it’s run, insider gossip etc; fans chatline, competitions etc; audit other premiership club sites like Arsenal and Chelsea and steal their ideas and look at MUTV and see if we could take some of their thinking and translate the principles to the web

Have it run by Marc Jones, Paul Raymond and yourself. Manic but informative, a good read and chaos all rolled into one.

Like the Dicky Guy thing though

It is good to see that they have started to get more partisan & for example not ignored the rubbish that Cort & Euell are coming out with

You may be interested to know that WFC's OS is now either being run, or is just about to be run, by NTL.

Would you like to see such things as ticket purchasing for WFC games available on-line? :

Yes 54 %
No 44 %
  Maybe 2 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

It is a scandal that it does not exist today

Yes, but only if the buyer has to give season ticket details.

It may help some, but I would be reluctant to use it. As a season ticket holder, when I buy additional tickets I want them to be as near as possible to my seat, and this is easier to do when talking to someone

Yes, and OSC membership purchase too

No. There has been too much of the wrong people getting tickets for big games as it is (i.e. Man U away etc).

If it would be of great aid to many then yes, say overseas Dons. Otherwise it is difficult. It is not particularly reliable, and away fans can purchase them just as easily in home sections. I am not a fan of the idea.

Can do it by e-mail. I guess you mean using HTML or Java.(yes, I do) Be good, but I don’t know if I’d use it. I haven’t got a credit card for the internet.

Yes, through official site, saves pressing 2 million different buttons while trying to get through to an operator at the box office.

Huddersfield are about to embark on on-line ticket purchasing. For those worried about tickets getting in the wrong hands, how's this for an idea? Ensure purchasing could only be done via having a special WFC "Internet membership" no. You would have to apply on-line, free of course, but you must have a CG/ST number to do it. I don't believe that there isn't technology for rejecting orders that don't have valid membership no.

What is your favourite non-fan-run/non-OS WFC-related web site? :

None 21 %
Sky Sports 16 %
  Teamtalk 13 %

OTHERS : Soccernet, F365, Yahoo sport, Newsnow, Aker RGI, Opta, Google.Com, Carling, ESPN.Com, Soccer Update, most of the majors, WSC, OTF.

YOUR COMMENTS:

Sad git that I am (Aker RGI)

Is there one?? Most are just reconstituted Soccernet BOLLOX!!!

Sky Sports. It is a well organised and sensible websites - it rarely reports on unsubstantiated rumours and frequently include good interviews. When the rest of the press was quoting non-sensical comments from Fash, they came up with good interviews from Alan Cork and Lawrie Sanchez and Harry Bassett . They know what questions to ask and generally seem to want to present a balance view.

Most people seem thoroughly unimpressed by the general WFC offerings. A couple of people did put down that their favourites were SW19 and W&WW, which I don't think was quite the question. Not that I'm not flattered....

What is your least favourite non-fan-run/non OS WFC-related web site? :

None 31 %
Teamtalk 23 %
  Soccernet 11 %

OTHERS : Carlingnet, Sky, too many to mention, all of them, Official Site, a few, BBC, F365

YOUR COMMENTS:

Daily Mail wank (Soccernet)

Teamtalk, when they keep saying we're selling Ben Thatcher to spurs (oh dear....)

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick - it seems more indifference to general sites than anything.

Not including SW19's ARMY, what is your favourite WFC fan-run web site? :
(note: if you run your own web site, don't vote for yourself)

Weird and Wonderful World 85 %
It Must Be Dons 11 %
WISA Chat / Louis Myles' site 2 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

Jonesy's work of genius

Mr Jones' site sodomises all who stands in his path. I am currently arranging the award for him, however Ann Summers are out of butt plugs at the moment :)

Do you think there are too many fan-run WFC web sites about? :

No 81 %
Yes 10 %
  Don't know 5 %
  Just right number / possibly 2 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

They are all slightly different and offer good variety in the main

I tend to check what I consider to be "the best" but the rest are just repeating stuff if you look at them too. But hey, so long as they enjoy producing them

Should be better linked….perhaps one common news bin that they can write for

No, but there are a few too many shit ones though

There are too many that have been left since last year and before without updates. They are constantly linked to but have nothing there!

Nope. Its great to see so much passion. The knowledge gained form these sites has hardened my support for the club and its supporters.

General thumbs up for the HTML-clued up Womble.

If you don't run a WFC web site, would you be considering to do one in the next year or so? :

No 69 %
Yes 18 %
  Possibly 13 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

Just doing one for the Cyprus Wombles

Concentrating on away games

No. I am shit at websites although I am quite good at advising people on the regulatory side of running a website.(I shall leave you to work out who said that.....)

I was going to do one but I gave up because there are a few established ones such as SW19s Army, W&WW and It Must Be Dons so there would not be much for me to add really.

This may seem a high number of people who aren't going to do it, but most people seem not to have the time or technical know-how to do it.

Additional Comments on fan sites :

I thank all of the Webmasters for providing simple fans like me with the opportunity to read, contribute, debate and expend our vitriol at these oases in a web of shite!

I admire them all

How did we manage with just teletext?

Or write articles for one….perhaps with a proper fanzine…what happened to ‘Hoof’?? (back for the Tranmere game....tabloid size apparently.....SW19 is a regular contributor to it, and will be this time yet again)

The fan sites are good for finding out what the general feeling is amongst the fans before and after the games and getting all the gossip on whats going on.

Some of them look really cack.

Keep the debates going – Supporting WFC has improved because of them. I feel as though I am involved in the club daily rather than just on match days

Too many slaggings by part time fans (although I'm not too sure if this is referring to people who read the websites or the webmasters themselves. Clarification sought)

Love ‘em. SW19, weirdandwonderful, itmustbedons and WISA chat have kept my season going. I don’t have to feel the pain of relegation for 3 months, when there’s all this activity going on, thanks.

Each one I visit is totally individual. Each has its own style and type of jounalistic content. Considering that they are done in someone’s spare time I am amazed at the speed and quality of the content. I work in the media and believe me there are a loads of commercial sports sites that I deal with that are total pants. I actually show clients and sales persons sites like SW19, W&WW, Neils WFC, etc to show what surfers actually want. It’s a simple answer – its all about content.

So it seems us Webmasters are pretty popular guys then....

SW19's ARMY

What do you like most about SW19's ARMY? :

Content / opinions (attitude) 26 %
Honesty 19 %
  Humour 11 %

OTHERS : Writing quality, updated regularly, interaction with other supporters, conspiracy theories, design, nothing

YOUR COMMENTS:

The long commentary articles. You are not making a site in order to exhibit your ability to produce technical solutions. Your site gives a wide club information at the same time as it reflects your own point of view. You concentrate on that instead of a lot of statistics which you easily can find on the official (and other) site(s).

He seems to understand that there are many overrated Wimbledon players

Says exactly the things I do about certain players, ex-managers & owners

Updated regularly, writer obviously cares for WFC

Bitter humour

The angst and the attempts to be analytical in situations where it is not possible to do so.

To the same standard as weirdandwonderful only rougher. Both sites make me laugh and I enjoy reading them. SW19 is the angry man’s website, but I like the angry man. A lot of what makes him angry, makes me angry, and even when it doesn’t I can see where he’s coming from.

The journalistic writing style and opinions of your goodself. Its candid, non abusive, but strong minded with evidence to back up beliefs – perfect journalism.

What do you dislike most about SW19's ARMY? :

Nothing 16 %
Slow loading / design / java (or tickatape) / too OTT 10 %
Too long winded or "heavy" 6 %

OTHERS : Too optimistic, too pro-Drillo or Norwegians, use of abbreviations, Morden, not on any search engines, this poll, too much swearing, too obsessed with new ground, not enough rumours or gossip, What If??, intolerant, spelling, too little guestbook traffic, web address too difficult, the name, no pictures of Bjork, intruding non-political correctness

YOUR COMMENTS:

Have you not heard of the paragraph tag!!! (I use the BR tag. Does that count?)

The bits which were written by Egil Olsen’s deranged mother. And opinions with which I don’t agree

YOUR PATHETIC BIASE TOWARDS EGIL AND THE REST OF THE NORGES, WHEN IT WAS QUITE CLEAR FROM DAY ONE THAT THEIR HEARTS WEREN’T WITH THE DONS AND YOUR CONSTANT SLAGGING OF PLAYERS WHO ARE TRUE DONS THRU AND THRU

The owner sometimes seems to have a (not so hidden) hidden agenda. If you don’t happen to agree with it, it can make it quite heavy reading.

When you wish evil on people.eg. death. Each to their own but I don’t like it. (do you think Eminem really means it when he raps about raping his own mother?)

I've killed the java applet a couple of months ago. Can't do much about the speed of it, and like I say, my opinions are my opinions and my opinions only. Though I'm glad that the majority feel there's nowt wrong with SW19. And no, I don't understand why someone put down "Morden" either.

What improvements would you make to SW19's ARMY? :

Better design 24 %
None 16 %
Guest articles from club insiders / chat room / more humour 5 %

OTHERS : more sounds, more quizzes, more photos, mailing list, get rid of What If??, make it quicker, more polls, get rid of front page, guestbook more like Jonesy's, shut it down, more away stuff, date your updates better, change the name, more pictures of Bjork, more updates, more rants

YOUR COMMENTS:

Drawing and designing probably is not that REPD bloke's strong point.

All the above has been noted. Bearing in mind this is a one-man operation 99% of the time, the design will probably stay as it is until I learn how to draw. I think there are too many underutilised chatrooms about anyway, IMO. Working on more sounds (if anyone can direct me to any more, I'll be most grateful), and I'm not too sure if Bjork is right for this fanzine.

What is your favourite section in SW19's ARMY? :

News 58 %
Guestbook / articles 12 %
  Odds / JFEA 5 %

OTHERS : Sights and Sounds, all of it, front page, regulars, exit

YOUR COMMENTS:

News. It's not really news. It's 1/10 news and 9/10 angst/rants/distrust of the whole world. Nice.

Personally, I'm glad News won because it's the bit which takes up most time :) I get the feeling that the JFEA will have to make a comeback to stop mutiny. Suitable name change is required (something like the Ian Selley right boot).

Do you find SW19's ARMY useful?:

Yes 88 %
No 10 %
  Sometimes 2 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

more reliable than Ceefax.

The news I gather from all of the sites is useful yes, but I can rarely tel you who’s site I got it off first…they all have similar news really…the opimions occasionally make you go, ‘yeah, I never thought of it like that though’

No, but I didn’t think it was intended to be

Not useful, just interesting

How do you compare SW19's ARMY to other fan-run websites?

Favourably 90 %
Not favourably 6 %
  Can't compare 4 %

YOUR COMMENTS:

It’s no HTML masterpiece, but great content is what it is ultimately all about

It’s different on the whole, it’s more of a rant

Joint best with W&WW

I like this site just for it’s views…..that’s the way it should stay

Poor

You can't compare an apple to an orange unless you do so by adopting some ridiculous criteria.(this was the same person who said that I was trying to be analyitical in situations where it's impossible to be analytical)

Better than most. WWW edges it just because more people use the guest book, though your articles are better

Additional Comments on SW19's ARMY :

Good job, keeping taking the piss out of wanky agents and players

Probably the top site for all round information. W&WW has the best GB (especially for non footy talk!) but a few iffy sections! Reservoir Dons has some cracking sections, but SW19’s ARMY is the most consistent

I just wish we were actually back in SW19

Nice One! Try and doing some leafleting as well, there's a lot of lazy fans I know that don't know you exist and can't be arsed trying to find you, a piece of paper may get them into action.

Keep it going and get it registered properly…….try and get a way to make some money on it……..(I know you do it for love)…..but it must be worth a bash. The sites and sounds section again suffers from the long wait for downloads. When you consider that this is a UK site general download time should be improved….it’s a quick and easy thing to do…..and quality doesn’t suffer when the right tools are used. (if somebody could tell me how to find these right tools, let me know)

You undermine your generally sensible views and observations with an obsessive fixation on the ground which results in you going over old ground time and time again.

GET A LIFE AND STOP LICKING THE ARSE OF BRG

What you are doing is important for wombles, so keep on keeping on

The new contribution of articles by different people is good.

Don’t change the style of reporting. It is honestly one of the two sites I visit every day religiously, and has help inspire me to try and my own.

Good, quality site that adds humour to news and stories. Good to see that you will be adding pictures of the training ground as it is being built.

"Keep up the good work" seems to be the order of the day here......
