Help save Hendon FC. Their future is looking very, very dodgy unless their move from their current Claremont Road ground to the Copthall stadium goes through. Key to this is permission to build on the Claremont Road site, without which the whole scheme will fall through. An online petition to support this is available at http://www.petitiononline.com/SaveHFC/petition.html Cheers

Spam is reckoned to account for 80% of all internet traffic. I have yet to find any account of anyone willing to sign up for something they've had spammed (though there stands a good chance that somebody on here will go for the S&M/swingers stuff). Why somebody has decided to single this site out I don't know, but my threat to them from last night still stands. Oh, and if it continues, I have a plan up my sleeve.

I don't even understand what the purpose of the spam is - it's not like there's a website address left in each post, so anyone can check out the viagra or swingers things (not that I'd want to, I hasten to add). And what's with all this 'nice site' business? Is it solely just to piss people off? If so, that's is S-A-D.

Never ever watched football in France - Friday, 17 September 2004 at 17:02:57

#6 - I am basically one of those sad bastards who likes watching sports events around the world. Only been recently (last 3 years) that I've been in a position to go around Europe so much. Seen quite a few sporting events in the US and Canada, they're "different" but in their own way very enjoyable (one of my favourite games I've ever been to was Oakland vs Boston in baseball, with 40k there). With luck, I may have enough UA miles to fly to Buenos Aires...

SM4 - Friday, 17 September 2004 at 16:59:48

REPD - so you're simply a connoisseur of football? Have you been anywhere out of Europe, eg South America? My dad was in the army, so when I was a kid we lived around Europe and also in the US. Somewhat stupidly I didn't take advantage and go to any sporting events (except to see the Washington Redskins a couple of times - and in that case I'm using the term 'sporting event' pretty loosely). A mate and I quite fancy seeing some clubs in Europe (big and small). Aside from the usual - Real Madrid/Barca/Inter etc - are there any you'd recommend? Ever been to Lyon?

Some good stuff at Ladies games... - Friday, 17 September 2004 at 11:23:03

Enjoyed reading about your exploits at the Cletic game but you ruined it a bit by contradicting yourself on the social ills of Glasgow's east-end ... your quote:"As I trudged back to central Glesga, through yet more poverty-stricken East End streets (why do Celtic fans get the shitty council housing and Rangers fans the better living quarters? I blame the masonic elements of Scottish society)" So Rangers fans get the better living quarters but hey you said earlier in your article as you ventured through Bridgeton the loyalist area ... your quote: "I walked past what can best be described as one of the worst housing estates I have ever seen. Boarded up housing everywhere, wrecked street lights, that sort of thing..... I counted 3 bits of graffiti advertising the UVF. I don't think they were asking people to support the Union of Vegetable Farmers either. Keeping my head down, gob shut and watching around for anyone else acting remotely suspicious (no exaggeration either), I finally reached the safety of Parkhead" Contradiction there pal must be the influence of the Roman Catholic elements of society !! lol. Anyway I enjoyed your article otherwise

Cambs - "the vast majority of our fans are too posh for football". Careful, our lot will start murmuring quietly over their copies of the Independent and over-priced organic fair trade coffee :) I would forget about laying the ghost of Franchise to rest, that will take a long while. I do think with the problems at Selhurst/MK etc, and the re-adjusting that the CCL and now R1 entailed, we've simply forgotten how to sing. Ashford this year (first game) was a very good atmosphere as well. As weird as this sounds, when we actually realise we're watching a football match we can get behind people as much as anyone...

SW19 DVD competition - ends today - Friday, 17 September 2004 at 09:53:20

Our fans have always been quiet regardless of whether we're winning or losing. I remember at Selhurst in our relegation season when we were 2 - 1 down to Villa, the bench and the tannoy system were trying to whip the crowd into a frenzy, we eventually got going in the 80th minute and up popped Hartson in injury time to score an equaliser. That was one of only a handful of times i can remember the hair standing up on the back of my neck because of the volume of the crowd. The crowd at AFC has been pretty flat this season, great atmosphere at Horsham, yet again though, i was standing right in the middle of our 30 or so fans that bother to sing. Trouble is, and it sounds silly to say, the vast majority of our fans are too posh for football, looking around Kingsmeadow is more like looking around Lords on the 3rd day of the test against Australia. I've only missed 7 AFC games since we were formed and the conversation now is as dull as it was back in 2002. Certain sections of the crowd need to forget about 'Franchise', stop harping back to 'the good old days', stop moaning about everything sodding thing going, and concentrate on what's going on on the pitch at the moment. One day, hopefully we'll be able to put the ghost of Wimbledon FC to bed and start singing and shouting for AFC. If ever you fancy playing spot the moaner at an AFC game, just look out for the people that still wear Wimbledon FC merchandise

Catching up. SteveT - like that Fortuna song, would love to hear it against T&M :) Yes, Duisburg station was a shithole, though if you want a crap station, try Warsaw's.... RB - Bury, Altringham (sp) to name two smaller ones. Or Oldham. If you fancy a bigger club, try Bolton, which isn't far from Manchester. Don't bother with Man Shitty, their fans will do your head in with their constant whining. Of course, if you want to be different, support Man Utd..... Block B - it's not as swashbuckling this season but was it ever likely to be? We're in a far more competitive division this season, so unless we're playing a really shite team it'll be more digging in. And have to say, at various points last season things were more tedious crowd wise.

And don't forget the SW19 competition ends tomorrow - Thursday, 16 September 2004 at 16:17:23

Good report again Rob. Thing about watching AFC for me this season is that they are, frankly, a dull bunch. There's none of the passion of old (Oakins/Sully/Sheerin), not as much of the occasional flashes of class (Sidwell/Cooper). The new breed are workmanlike and do a job but I'm not convinced that they have taken AFC to heart. I want to see blood & thunder, players screaming at each other, temple veins about to burst! OK, we do have the odd flashes of brilliance, mainly from Ursell, though his tricks are no better than those I see at Goals on a Wednesday night and his passing is appalling (football league teams looking at him? Do me a favour!). No, this season's bunch are dull, dull, dull. Great of course to be winning all the time (no complaints there), just wish we could do it with passion and style. No wonder the ground has been so quiet these last few games.

Good article, REPD. Isn't Duisburg station a shitehole! A couple of years ago, I went to see Fortuna Dusseldorf vs Dresden. I thought better of doing the 'Dambusters' celebration! Dusseldorf were singing a song to 'Sailing' that my (German) girlfriend translated as: Dresden, you are anti-social You live under bridges And in the hostel at the railway station. Something of my knowledge of Germans makes me think this was a fairly accurate translation!

Another point to ponder. How the hell did Gav get man of the match last night? He certainly wasn't up to his usual standards, as most of his passes were either over hit or went astray. Do the sponsors watch the games as there have been other dubious decisions in the past? Shame about last night but hopefully we will learn that we can’t shut off like we did in the CCL matches and get away with it. On a more positive note I think Anthony Howard is improving each game I see him play in. He virtually held the defence together last night (apart from the last couple of mins!)

SW19 Ashford FA Cup game now up
REPD
SM4 - Saturday, 4 September 2004 at 20:50:27

Bad Egg - that sort of reaction is normal for a cup game as people rarely take into account the "absent" season ticket holders that make up the numbers at league games. As a crowd control expert (OK, a man with a yellow bib and a mandate to harass REPD) I would have said that the number in the ground was almost identical to that at the first Ashford game, which was officially nearly 3100 but with 400 ish non-attending ST holders. For the record, the RPV home game at the end of the first season was a true capacity crowd as we actually let in more than the official capacity (with Police permission) to compensate for the 500 or so absentees that we usually had - hence the crowd figure that was above the capacity. Hope that helps explain the apparant "irregularity" ... :)

Just to remind people about the fundraising day down at Kingsmeadow on Sun 12th Sept. We will be re-staging the 1988 FA Cup final as well as having a number of ex players from 50's onwards. The tickets are now on sale from the club. There is also an excellent poster available, if you can please e-mail Niall (niallcouper AT yahoo.co.uk), print a few copies and display them at work and in shops close to you. Would be great to get a packed Kingsmeadow.

Not sure I'm with you on the potentially confidence shattering abilities of just one defeat. I would think a great number of clubs would love to be in the position we are in and be able to even discuss such things. Winning has become a habit. Horsham showed me that there's nothing wrong with our confidence or ability to play until the final whistle.

understanding - Wednesday, 1 September 2004 at 12:08:44

Rob - agree that we are currently on a high confidence wise and that for some, maybe many, of our fans, a defeat will be nothing short of a disaster. Personally, however, I think that a defeat would actually be a good thing as sometimes we play as if we are scared to lose. Once we lose, we can start again. I have no concerns about the mental strength of the team to come back after a disappointment, but I do share your concerns about what some of our fans might do if we were to get beaten. I was gutted after the Colne game last year, but realised that they had a game plan and a plan B. We had a game plan with no backup if it didn't work, so we lost. Great game as it raised the passions and we will see (and have already seen) games like that all this season. I believe that anyone complaining about the performances when we are winning is in some way preparing for the inevitability of a defeat, so perhaps the wailing will not be too bad with afterthought? More of a worry is the immediate reaction after the final whistle. After all, nobody really worried about losing to Withdean the first time and the Ash and Chipstead games were very close, so disappointment was the biggest negative feeling. I recall many people being angry at drawing with Sandhurst last season and feel that there may be a similar feeling when we drop points this year. To me, it all depends on how we play. It would be strangely ironic if we played really well and lost as I would be disappointed, but wouild console myself with the thought of the number of times we won when we were playing poorly. Can't speak for others though.

Couldn't agree more about the winning habit and also the fact that you can get into the losing habit quite easily. I can see us coming unstuck away from home as teams will come at us more but i also expect a smash and grab performance from a visiting team at Kingsmeadow!!
Howard
Woking - Tuesday, 31 August 2004 at 16:40:44

Howard - it's quite possible that we could lose 2-3 games on the trot following a loss, or suffer a very heavy loss. One thing the team does have at the moment is extreme confidence in our ability to win. If we start having doubts about that, like say a heavy loss, we could find ourselves unstuck.
REPD
OK, maybe being a bit harsh in my last post but the jist still stands - Tuesday, 31 August 2004 at 14:50:24

If we don't perform to the best of our abilities in each game we will be beaten. The teams we have played so far have shown that they have enough quality to beat us and they always seem to find an extra 10% because it is their big match. We have to be focused right to the final whistle because opposition will not collapse in the last quarter of the match as was the case with many CCL teams. I am enjoying the matches because they are tightly contested and much more competitive. All we want is promotion and if we lose a few games on the way who gives one. I predict that we will lose approx 3-4 games.
Howard
Woking - Tuesday, 31 August 2004 at 14:44:42

Tudor - I'm sure you're aware as much as I am that our lot seem to think they have a deity-given right to win all the time. Look at the way our fans react whenever something negative is written by somebody in a letters page for example. If I had any confidence in our fanbase to accept a loss or two with graciousness I wouldn't feel the need to make such comments...

Chess & Hook ref who sent off our Club Secretary wins "Worst ever performance by a Ref" award in my book. Wasn't at yesterday's game but on evidence of this league so far sounds like we're facing the bizarre situation where we are going to try and rise through the divisions by playing good football with clogger-opponents trying to stop us playing it around (as we used to do before).

Chipstead at home last year is still my number one in the boredom charts. Am pleased with the way the team is shaping up and i think we are playing some entertaining football. I presume the 'much maligned' comment towards Richard Butler is becoming a bit of a running joke or do you not rate him? Personally, i have been very impressed with him. He is strong, holds the ball up, links well with Ursell (GOD), seems to have an eye for goal and is surprisingly fast. Also, isn't he quite young so there is still room for further improvement??

B Block - like most styles of play, it will take getting used to. It seems to be a favoured style of DA, if comments by Hendon fans when he arrived at AFCW are anything to go by. Ultimately, it's working - we're 4 games from 4, top, feared and we are scoring goals. Bit like Chelski, we're ditching the glamourous stuff and going for success, though hopefully we'll get what we want and Chelski don't...

CambsDon - let's not forget people have season tickets for home games and not away games. Having a season ticket not only takes some of the hassle out of attending games but home attendances count season ticket holders whether they attend or not. I guess also that some people will prefer the routine of a home game, knowing exactly what to expect in terms of parking, food, seating, etc. I also travel the odd game from Cambridge but can't afford nor have the time to attend every game, particularly midweek.

I don't really agree that the AFCW old lags were generally poorer than the new boys. I thought that Gibbo helped a lot to turn the match around and that Matt was the best of a not great back 3. It was also his trademark header at the end that Butler finally turned in for the winner. Hard to separate cause & effect but Joe's arrival did happen at a high point for us and provided some misssing muscle up front. If anything I felt that Woolner (whom I rate pretty highly normally) had an off day at wing back and Butler seemed at fault for their first goal. It's all a matter of opinion IMO.

Cambs - historically, our away support has always been a bit weird, insofaras we can take quite a few to one game but just getting into double figures the next week. Yesterday, it wasn't the easiest place to get to from work, especially if you work up town and work late. I think people have to prioritise : they try and make evening home games (though I know at least 2 people who really can't make it), but if something has to give it's the away games.

Probably echoing what #6 said - Thursday, 19 August 2004 at 16:06:31

Cambs Don - good on your for travelling down from Cambridge all the time, but I think that some people don't go to away games because, although they might go to every home game, they have wives, kids, DIY, shopping, work etc etc which prevent them from going to every single game. Away games are the ones they miss. I go to some away games, but quite difficult for me to make midweek games (both home and away, but I try my best to go to home ones because I've paid for them in my season ticket) due to my work, and sometimes have other things to do at weekends.

Anyway, c.50% of our support goes to away games, which is probably a higher percentage than a lot of clubs. - Thursday, 19 August 2004 at 15:57:55

Went to the game last night, travelled all the way down from Cambridge by train, as I always do, got soaked going back, journey took 4 hours due to 'works' on the line, didn't care though coz AFC won. Now, i'd guess there were aboout 1500 there last night. Can someone please tell me why we have such a poor away following compared to our home gates?? It was the same when we played at Selhurst. We'd have 8000 for a 'home' game against Palace, but when it came to the away fixture, played in exactly the same stadium, we'd only have 2000, we couldn't even sell our entire allocation. Croydon isn't a million miles from Wimbledon, so why wasn't last nights game an all ticket sell out? Who are these extra 1000 - 1500 people who re appear for home games? Surely they don't all live in Kingston/Norbury? That's not exactly 'home' either, is it??

Ashamed to admit to being a named person that knows the webmaster (only cursorily though fortunately) - Wednesday, 18 August 2004 at 09:05:32

I will also point out that I don't know who "maybe?" is specifically, but I can quite easily find out said person's identity if I so wished. Let this be a lesson to everyone.

SM4 - Tuesday, 17 August 2004 at 16:45:04

OK, as you know, anonymous posting is one of my pet hates in life. And "maybe?" posting at 11:14:16 managed to annoy me greatly. Well, Mr or Ms "maybe?" posts from tesco.net. They use Windows NT 5.1 and their IP address is 217.43.29.157 which is most interesting. And, just as interesting, said person made 9 visits to SW19's guestbook (having typed in the URL directly) between time of posting and 11:09:35. Now, slagging me off as a "named" person I can cope with. Slagging me off under an assumed name is not something I tolerate so easily. So, unless I start feeling more vindictive and trace further, let me warn you that if you piss me off sufficiently I can trace you and have that level of detail on you. Lecture over.

Bloody hell, agreeing with Tudor and MD. Whatever next? I think we're in an unusual position at AFCW insofar as the people who run AFCW on a day-to-day basis are people we "know". Now, as the club progresses into a "normal" football club (always inevitable IMO) people in general are going to treat it like a football club. Yes, that will mean that somebody is going to come onto a guestbook and say things that people might not want to hear. It will happen at every football club and AFCW will be no exception. Bloody hell, look at what we used to say about Koppout and Hammam. The key is to be vigilant in what you say and above all keep a bit of perspective about what it REALLY means.

notwithstanding the fact that (Rob's) original comment was not meant to be a snipe - Tuesday, 17 August 2004 at 13:16:41

Rob (being serious for a minute) I know it sounds heavy (YO ref) but as this club grows, becomes more like a "normal football club" (TM Tu7or), people involved have more to lose and reputations to protect, I think (mostly) very original and humorous fan sites like this need to be a bit more careful about what they print. Obviously this example is another storm in an egg-cup, but in the future it is worth remembering that the Internet is not free from libel laws (or is it slander, I can never remember) Keep up the good work. FWIW I loved the Ashford Town (Chav) report :)

Ah fuck it, I need to get this off my chest, and I'm not going to wait for some anon spineless chickenshit to reveal themselves (and I *seriously* hope it isn't somebody I know). In the five years I've been doing this site, I can count on one hand the amount of times I've been pulled up over this. With the millions of column inches I've written, it's only natural that one day I'll slip up. And on Saturday I did. Correction made, end of story. Except it isn't. I don't know what it is about this club, but people - whatever faction they're in - like to drag things out until there's a level of distrust that prevents people from getting on with things. I'm not perfect in this score at all (when in Rome etc) but there is a bad taste around certain things. As for libellous crap, reading the original comment it wasn't THAT suggestive a sentence. Incorrect, but if it was true it wasn't anything suggestive, and is no more libellous than saying that AFCW isn't doing the catering this season. If I deliberately set out to be libellous, I could do it a lot more vindictively. I get told things all the time by people, and if repeated on here would seriously PO people. I don't do it because (a) I can't prove it in court and (b) it wouldn't do AFCW much good if I repeated it without having just reason for printing it. Without wishing to be rude, may I make an open statement to everyone to try and show some sort of maturity and stop acting like a bunch of student political activists over things that start out as molehills and should stay as molehills. Thank you.

Good write-up of game, as usual. However, just wanted to say that wasps get a really bad press. The reason they are all over the place at the mo is that the worker wasps have been kicked out of their nests, and are thus out on the town before the first frosts get 'em. Through the spring and early summer, they've spent their time killing a whole load of flies, caterpillars and other bugs that would otherwise piss us off more than poor wasps on the piss as their days draw to a close.

Few things for a few people : MD - I can only assume that Trevor's words with the players must have happened Monday night. For a couple of the bar staff in question were looking at some of the players trying to pick out the offenders. With luck it'll be sorted, but the original comments still stand as much as ever. The fact is, it happened once and that's once too often...... Supergrass - hmm, interesting. I can't help getting the feeling that somewhere down the line something will bite AFCW in a very embarrasing - and damaging - way ....... Cambsdon - they use Tempest because it's a local company, they can sort of get the stock in on time. There probably are better manufacturers on the market. IME football kits and much stuff made by companies like Umbro are complete crap. Some are saying that the logo on the new shirts is starting to deteriorate which if it becomes a problem might force AFCW to look again at Tempest..

Now i'm going to have to wait at least 4 years to own my first AFC shirt. The designs featured in the programme a few months back, looked ok. I'm sure the shirt would have looked quite good if someone other than 'TEMPEST' (who the fu*k) had made them. Does anyone know if Spall are still going???

RB - I can't comment on who the players in question are as I don't know and can't verify if I did know. Apparently, this isn't the first time it's happened, reportedly occured last season (or the season before that), and words had to be spoken to. Seems a problem at AFCW, and I don't think the almost fawn-like adulation by some fans helps. As for what KC said exactly, I don't know as I don't go in the main stand, but my source(s) are pretty reliable...
